Kerala: Contractor, 5 held in giant wheel mishap

The carnival held at the 'Delta' ground under the nose of Chittar Police lacked safety precautions.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Chittar police on Sunday arrested six persons in connection with the death of a five-year-old boy after he fell down from a giant wheel at a carnival at Chittar, near here, on Thursday night. The arrested include the contractor Ramla and the workers — Muhammad Abdulla, Shah, Ramesh, Prabhu and Dinesan — who operated the wheel.

Alan is the son of Saji, Kulathungal, Chittar. His sister Priyanka, 15, who fell down while trying to save the boy, is in a private medical college in Tiruvalla with severe internal injuries. A preliminary report by ADM S. Sajeev found that the police and the local body had failed in preventing the giant wheel from functioning though it lacked proper permission from the respective departments.

The carnival held at the 'Delta' ground under the nose of Chittar Police lacked safety precautions. The ADM has also ordered to stop all the entertainment rides in the district. Alan's father Saji and mother Bindu were near the giant wheel when the accident happened. Their daughter, Nimmi, was in a nearby bucket of the wheel.

Alan was a first standard student of government LPS, Koothattukulam, and Priyanka, a tenth standard student of Chittar HSS. The giant wheel with a height of 20 feet was installed as part of the 'Chittar Vasantholsavam Onappooram' organised by Green Events, an event management company.
