Railways for another road-cum-railway bridge on Godavari: MP

KAKINADA: Rajamahendravaram MP Margani Bharat Ram on Friday informed that union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has positively responded to the construction of another road-cum-railway bridge (RCRB) across the Godavari River connecting Kovvur and Rajamahendravaram railway stations.

He pointed out that the present, there is a 4.1 km RCRB between Kovvur and Rajamahendravaram, which had been constructed in 1974. It is nearly 50 years old and is often developing cracks on its secondary joints. Commuters are thus facing a bumpy ride. Though roads and buildings authorities have been carrying out repair works, there is no relief for commuters, as these are only temporary measures.

The MP pointed out that recently, handrails and footpaths at various locations on the bridge had collapsed. The same thing may happen at other locations too. Thus, for safeguarding vehicular traffic and pedestrians, steel pathways have to be laid on both sides of the bridge for a length of 2.928 km immediately.

Bharat said as a permanent solution, he has underlined the importance of an alternate RCRB to the railway minister, who promised to look into the matter and do the needful.
