Lawyers are not owners of courts, says Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan

He lashed out at the lawyers who have prevented the mediapersons from doing their job.

KOZHIKODE: "The lawyers are not the owners of courts," according to Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan. Addressing an award distribution function hosted by the Calicut Press Club here on Thursday, he lashed out at the lawyers who have prevented the mediapersons from doing their job. "If the lawyers consider themselves as superior to the court or show their dominance, then it is the responsibility of the judiciary to show them their place. No one has been entrusted to hinder one's right to know or to inform," he pointed out.

"The judiciary should take action against those who encumber the right of a person to know, but unfortunately the judiciary has kept itself away from its responsibility," he said. "A society without media is undemocratic. Our people have the right to know what is happening inside a court and what decisions are made, and it is the mediapersons who perform this task. To stop the media from entering the court to do its job of reporting is illogical, citing a mistake committed by a journalist," he added.
