DGP warns misuse of ambulance sirens

HYDERABAD: Director General of Police Anjani Kumar warned ambulance drivers of strict action if they use the siren when they are not responding to an emergency. He shared a video of an incident in which an ambulance belonging to a private hospital, with its siren blaring, was given traffic clearance but stopped at an eatery to buy snacks.

"Genuine emergencies require activating sirens for swift and safe passage. Strict action against abusers is advised. Together, we can enhance emergency response and community safety, " Anjani Kumar said in the tweet.

The police had recently launched a campaign to stop ambulance drivers from switching on the siren to make their way through traffic.

Inquiries revealed that the incident happened at 8 pm on Monday near Basheerbagh. Narayanguda traffic station house officer S. Venkanna said the police had initiated action against the driver.

In the video that the DGP shared, the driver, holding a cold drink, is heard telling the police that the duty nurse had not had lunch and she was feeling giddy and so he had stopped by the eatery. The video was recorded in the body-worn camera issued to traffic cops.
