Old City’s roads turn nightmarish

The works for installation of cables was taken up a few months ago, but after their completion, it remained untouched by the authorities

Hyderabad: Travelling on the dug-up roads has turned nightmarish for motorists in parts of Old City, as trenches made for laying electric cable wires and storm water drains remain open even after completion of the works. The entire stretch of 3-4 km from Dabeerpura to Saidabad turned slushy following rains, making it difficult for commuters to travel.

The works for installation of cables was taken up a few months ago, but after the completion of works, it remained untouched by the civic authorities. Saidabad Crossroads connects major highways from Malakpet side towards Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam from the Inner Ring Road.

“It’s an ordeal for those taking this route as a major portion of the road is dug up. Now that rains started, this stretch has turned slushy, posing risks to motorists further,” said Abdul Rahman, an activist who has been complaining to the authorities to repair the road.

Just a few metres away from Charminar, the business at Lad Bazaar has been affected by the ongoing civic works. According to locals, the storm water drain works were taken up from Murgi Chowk (clock tower) near the area and it badly impacted the movement of vehicles. “The works are over but the authorities failed to undertake the patchwork. Half-a-kilometre stretch from Lad Bazaar to Murgi Chowk is completely damaged, after the works of storm water drain were undertaken,” said Md Ahmed, who regularly takes this route.

In other places potholes welcome people, as most of the localities have poor quality roads. Except for a few roads, most of the inner roads have developed potholes.

Delay in clearing silt and other waste after desilting works is proving to be another hazard, as piled up wastage near nalas once again flowing back following rains. Despite warnings by the higher-ups, the situation at the major nala at Dabeerpura and Azampura towards Musi remains unchanged.

“The desilting works being undertaken are of no use, as they fail to clear the heaps of the wastage near nalas, causing it to flow back inside it. Now, who is to be blamed for choking nalas?” asked Rahman.
