Alappuzha: Elderly woman laid to rest, finally

Kayamkulam Police said that the burial held at 11 am after the Jacobite faction decided to avoid the disputed cemetery.

ALAPPUZHA: The burial of 84-year-old woman delayed at Kadeesa Orthodox Church due to infighting for over a week was held on Thursday at a separate place in front of it after the intervention of district collector Dr Adeena Abdulla.

Kayamkulam Police said that the burial held at 11 am after the Jacobite faction decided to avoid the disputed cemetery.

Body of Mariyama Philip, Thoppil, Pallickal who died on July 4, was kept in morgue due to dispute.

The dispute erupted after Jacobites refused to conduct a burial as per Orthodox rituals at the cemetery which is under the Orthodox custody.

On Wednesday, Dr Abdulla asked both parties to resolve the issue and bury the body at the earliest.

Row over its ownership between two factions has been going on for years since both share the cemetery. Whenever a person from Jacobites faction dies, the burial takes place based on court orders.

The post-burial rites used to near the church as well as the burial ground with a limited number of relatives. The fresh stand-off was after a local court refused to issue orders since the Supreme Court had ruled in favour of the Orthodox faction.

Earlier in November, the burial of a 94-year-old man was delayed for two weeks over a standoff between two factions at St. Mary's Orthodox Church at Kattachira near Kayam-kulam. The collector had to give an ultimatum then.
