Fever kills seven, Shashi Tharoor for war on dengue
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Seven more people succumbed to various fevers including dengue and leptospirosis in the capital on Tuesday. The victims who succumbed to dengue have been identified as Anila, 35, of Poonthura; Shibu, 38 ,of Aruvikkara and Sosamma, 60, of Kunnathukal. Those who succumbed to suspected leptospirosis were identified as Kani Raj, 29, of Poonthura and Noushad, 38, of Aruvikkara, reports the Directorate of Health Services (DHS). This is apart from the death of Rajeev Das, 32, of Pozhiyoor and Raji R, 18, of Parassala.
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor who visited the home of a 13-year-old who succumbed to fever the other day said that Kerala was unable to cope up with the rising death toll. He demanded that the state government declare this as a public health disaster and approach the centre for assistance as over 300 people have already succumbed to fever.
“We must declare war on dengue, press retired doctors and nurses into service, distribute mosquito nets and repellents, engage NGOs and local authorities,” he said. On Tuesday, around 122 suspected cases of dengue and 94 confirmed cases were reported in the city. The highest numbers of cases were reported at Attingal (5), Balaramapu-ram (5) and Amachal (4).
