University of Hyderabad looks to set up CCTV system
Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad has formed a two-member committee to examine the feasibility of having CCTV surveillance on campus to improve security in the light of the recent incidents involving protests by students and the presence of poachers.
Last year, the UGC had issued guidelines on safety of students in higher education institutions in which it stressed on having CCTV cameras on campuses.
Osmania University plans to cover departments, canteens, hostels, messes, offices and roads over its 1,300-acre campus with 500 CCTV cameras. English and Foreign Languages University already has CCTV coverage.
The committee, with two professors from the department of computer and information sciences, headed by dean Prof. Arun Agarwal, will look into various aspects of installing the cameras like the number of cameras required, configuration, locations, storage of the data and submit a report.
The UoH will take a decision based on the availability of budget. As of now, a few CCTV cameras have been installed on the campus, mainly in the administration building.
