Report sought on Tasmac shops near edu centres

The survey details will be sent to the collector who will prepare a report based on the inputs from tahsildars and revenue officials.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu government has sought a report from the collectors on Tasmac shops located near schools, colleges and places of worship and action would be taken based on the report.

According to an official, the tahsildars and revenue officials will scrutinise the complaints of Tasmac shops located near educational institutions and places of worship and visit the places. They will take a survey in the area to ascertain the distance between the Tasmac shop from the educational institutions and worshiping places.

The survey details will be sent to the collector who will prepare a report based on the inputs from tahsildars and revenue officials. The state government will take 'appropriate action' based on the report from the district collectors, he said.

A Tasmac shop in Foreshore Estate was closed following continued protests from people. There are complaints about several Tasmac shops located near schools, colleges and places of worship, with demands for their closure or shifting them from the present location.

The AIADMK during the election campaign had promised to introduce phased prohibition in the state. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, immediately after assuming power ordered the closure of 500 Tasmac shops.
