HYDERABAD: Private weather forecaster Skymet on Monday predicted further delay to the monsoon and a severe dry spell in most parts of the state till the first week of July, citing an array of factors and underpinning weather conditions.
The progress of the southwest monsoon has not only been delayed due to cyclone Biparjoy, which threatens parts of western Gujarat, officials said.
In a report ‘Underpar June may spell trouble: Central parts more vulnerable’, the weather forecaster said its extended range prediction system (ERPS) is “projecting a dismal outlook for the next four weeks, between June 9 and July 6.”
It said monsoon rains are required the most over the ‘core monsoon zone’ of Maharashtra, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and east Uttar Pradesh.
As per the forecast, except for a tiny sliver of southwest Telangana, most of the state is set to experience extremely dry weather over the next four weeks, particularly in north Telangana. Districts in central Telangana are also set to face severe dry conditions, while the region located below the centre will experience moderately dry weather.
G.P. Sharma, Skymet president (meteorology & climate change), told Deccan Chronicle that the forecast takes into account various factors, the cyclone Biparjoy, the formation of El Nino, and other concurrent weather factors.
Skymet further warned that the dry weather over the Indian heartland looks like it would result in parched land and these conditions are coinciding with the crucial period of sowing of crops, “or at least preparing the fields. Inadequate rains over the central and western parts, the core monsoon zone will find it difficult to absorb the drying effects, rather early in the season. It is likely to leave the farmer in a state of indecisiveness, choosing between type of crop and the crop cycle.”
Meanwhile, the Telangana State Development Society, in its 72-hour forecast issued on Monday, predicted scanty showers over the next two days in parts of Khammam, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Mulugu, Jayashankar-Bhupalapalli, Mancherial and Komaram Bheem-Asifabad district, with Wednesday expected to be more or less a dry day for the entire state.
