Baby born in running train, mother leaves it in toilet and disappears

The unidentified woman delivered the baby in the toilet of the B-1 coach and left it in the washbasin

Visakhapatnam: An as-yet-unidentified woman delivered a baby in a running train, the 13351 Dhanbad-Alleppey Bokaro Express, and left it in the toilet while the train was passing through the Visakhapatnam railway limits on Wednesday.

Railway officials said the delivery took place before 8.25 am. “The unidentified woman delivered the baby in the toilet of the B-1 coach and left it in the washbasin. Co-passengers noticed the presence of the baby, a male child, and informed the onboard-TTE when the train had just left the Simhachalam station.

The TTE reported the matter to the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Visakhapatnam. The RPF rushed the baby to Divisional Railway Hospital here. “The health of the baby is stable and he has been shifted to KGH for further care. It will be handed over to childcare authorities,” the railway authorities said.

Divisional railway manager Anup Satpathy announced a “reward” for the TTE and offered to bear the full cost for the upbringing of the child.

"We are monitoring the health of the baby as well as conducting an investigation to find out the mother/parents. If the genuine mother/parents volunteer to come forward and own up the child, they will be given full financial support for his upbringing" Satpathy said.
