Nizamabad: Staff deliver baby without duty doctor
Nizamabad: Two staff members of a primary health care centre performed the delivery of a baby even when a doctor was not available, in Nizamabad district on Friday. While the mother survived, the baby died following complications.
On Saturday, the police registered a case against two staff members of the primary health centre at Kammarpally, about 55 km from Nizamabad, for medical negligence for causing the death of the infant.
The case was filed against health supervisor Vijaya and staff nurse Jyothi. According to sources, Mr Mallagari Narsaiah, a resident of Kammarpally, took his pregnant wife Renuka for delivery at the primary health care centre on Friday. In absence of the duty doctor, the PHC staff admitted the woman and performed the delivery, resulting in the death of the baby boy.
Following this, the family members protested at the hospital and lodged complaint with police.
Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Narsaiah said that he was ready to shift his wife to another hospital as no doctor was available at the Kammarpally primary health care centre. “The hospital staff assured us of a safe delivery and went ahead without a doctor,” he said.
“We have two daughters and had hoped for son this time, but negligence of the staff has shattered our dreams,” Mr Narasiah said.
Kammarpally PHC medical officer Dr Ambika said she was on leave and that the primary health care centre staff had admitted Ms Renuka as her condition was critical. “The life of the mother was saved, but the infant died,” she said.
District medical and health officer Dr Sudarshan has ordered inquiry in the incident.
