Keep lights on, police tells vacationers
Hyderabad: Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar said few people informed the local police when they locked their homes and went out of town. The number of burglaries increases in the summer when families go on vacation.
“If the citizen informs the police, it will help the inspector or sector sub-inspector increase patrolling in the particular area and avoid burglary,” Mr Kumar said.
He said the residents should at least inform their neighbours about their travel and ask them to keep an eye on their house. He said it would be helpful if residents left a light on in the house so that any suspicious movement is easily noticed.
“Many citizens concentrate on putting big locks on the main door but leave the back door and ventilator open. They should be careful about the other entrances also,” Mr Kumar said. He said CCTV cameras which were installed as part of the ‘Nenu Saitham’ project were helping curb burglaries and nab the burglars.
The number of hours burglaries fell from 511 in 2016 to 399 in 2017 and 286 last year. Police also attributed the decrease in the crime rate to their invoking the PD Act against repeat offenders.
