Vishu festival to go organic this year

KOCHI: Several agencies including Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), CPM district committee and cooperative and agriculture societies have started organic vegetable expos and sales outlets for the Vishu festival days.
Mammootty will inaugurate the district-level Vishu special organic vegetable stalls initiated by the CPM district committee at a function to be held at Rajendra Maidan on Tuesday.

Party district secretary P. Rajeev will also attend. More than 5000 kg of organic rice produced by members of farmers’ group at Kanjoor near Kalady will be available at the organic stalls. The “Gramika” brand Pokkali rice produced by Korambadam cooperative society will also be sold through the outlets.

The Vishu special stalls will be opened at selected places in the district while the agriculture produces will also be sold through the permanent outlets. Meanwhile, the Organic Fest organised by Organic Kerala Charitable Trust at Ernakulam Town Hall has different varieties of organic vegetables, fruits, pulses, rice and other products like honey and spices which have many takers.

The harvesting of GCDA’s annual golden cucumber cultivation during Vishu season was inaugurated by Kavya Madhavan on Monday. The Kanjikuzhi cooperative society in Kottayam is setting up stalls on the GCDA office premises on Tuesday and Wednesday from where people can buy organic vegetables and fruits.
