Kerala: Church too joins the bandwagon

Mar Perunthottam demanded that the state government take actions to strictly enforce the norms for conducting safe use of the crackers.

KOTTAYAM: The archdiocese of Changanacherry will regulate the use of crackers and other explosives for festivals coming under its jurisdiction in the context of the massive tragedy happened at the Puttingal temple in Paravur, said Archbishop Mar Joseph Perunthottam.

“The Church will take the initiative to regulate the use of crackers but it cannot stop the use all of a sudden,” he told DC. “We are thinking of preparing guidelines for the use of fireworks.”

Mar Perunthottam demanded that the state government take actions to strictly enforce the norms for conducting safe use of the crackers. The Pala diocese had on October 2015 issued a ban on the use of crackers at the festivals coming under its churches after the cracker mishap at the St George Church Aruvithura in April 2015 claimed the life of a person and injured a few others, Bishop of Pala Mar Joseph Kallarangattu told DC.
