Centre lauds Medical College Hospital doctors

A total of 879 people approached outpatient departments across Kerala due to complications caused by fireworks.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as the Intensive Care Units (ICU) of the Medical College Hospital continue to be full, the central delegation of doctors and the Health Department jointly decided not to shift patients who are in critical condition to any other hospitals.

The Central panel of doctors from New Delhi have expressed satisfaction in the facilities and lauded the proficiency of doctors at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Nine patients continue to be in critical condition, of which seven had suffered over 60 per cent burns. Two patients were shifted to Liver ICU and one was shifted to Gastroenterology ICU owing to the peculiar nature of their injuries. Around 27 people have head injuries, 48 have fractures and five have below 40 per cent burns.

“Our ICUs are already full. An additional five ventilators were purchased and three more were sourced from private hospitals to meet the dearth of ventilators,” said Health Minister VS Sivakumar.

The real magnitude of the Paravur fireworks tragedy seemed bigger as an additional 115 people mostly belonging to Chirayankeezhu, Varkala, Attingal and Kazhakoottam approached the Outpatient department of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Monday because of complications related to fireworks.

A total of 879 people approached outpatient departments across Kerala due to complications caused by fireworks. The Central panel of experts under Dr Manish Singhal said they had reported to the central government that patients would not have to be airlifted to any other cities for treatment.

“Around 50 surgeries were held in 24 hours in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and doctors here were fully trained to deal with this situation. Some of these patients have to undergo surgeries again and so all of us will continue to camp in MCH to guide doctors here,” Mr Singhal said.

Six plastic surgeons from Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore were airlifted to MCH on Monday. A four-member expert team from Amrita Institute of Medical Science, Kochi under plastic surgery head Mohit Sharma also is camping in Thiruvanantha-puram. This is apart from the central panel of around 20 doctors from various hospitals in New Delhi.
