Kerala brings self-financing colleges under scanner
Thiruvananthapuram: The Cabinet on Wednesday asked the Kerala Technological University to examine the functioning of self financing engineering colleges in the wake of the tragic death of Jishnu Prannoy, a student of Nehru College Pampady, Thrissur.
The committee will also examine the functioning of other engineering colleges, including those in the government sector.
Earlier, the Cabinet discussed the tragic incident and the grave allegations against Nehru College in detail. At the meeting, ministers expressed concern over the manner in which some self financing colleges were functioning.
The 18-year-old computer science student committed suicide following alleged harassment by college authorities. Cabinet felt the need for examining their functioning, especially academic and physical infrastructure facilities in institutions coming under Kerala Technological University.
As part of the evaluation process, all other problems prevalent in such institutions will come under the scanner.
“We have only directed the KTU to look into the academic and non academic activities in such institutions. The government will not have any direct role in the evaluation process. It is left to the university,” education minister C. Raveen-dranath said. He said the government was committed to ensure that tragic incidents like the one that happened in Nehru College are not repeated.
Sources said the university would focus particularly on the academic activities, extracurricular activities, hostel and recreational facilities in these institutions.
The panel will also assess the conduct of examinations and internal assessment criteria followed in the institutions.
