History-sheeter killed in police encounter at Sivagangai
Sivagangai: After high drama including in a hot chase, the police shot down a history-sheeter who hacked three policemen just before he fell prey to the bullets on a cashew nut farm at Nainakulam village in Sivagangai district on Wednesday.
The history-sheeter, Karthigai Swamy (28) from Vairavanpatti village who had 34 criminal cases pending against him, died even before he could be taken to hospital. When the two-sub-inspectors Boominathan, Syed Ali and police constable Udayanaswami surrounded Karthigai Swamy and his associate Silambarasan near bushes in the farm, Swamy attacked them with a big knife.
Though three cops sustained cut injuries, sub-inspector Boominathan managed to shoot the assailant with his revolver in self-defence, claimed a police source.
However, his associate Silambarasan managed to escape from the spot.
Earlier, the Sivaganga town police constable Velumurugan (36) also sustained cut injuries on his hand and near his eye when he tried to intercept a vehicle and prevent the history-sheeter and his associates from escaping to hide inside a farm.
According to Superintendent of Police T Jayachandran, the history-sheeter and five others stopped at a petrol bunk to fill fuel at Kudakoil village near Madurai Airport in the small hours. When the bunk employees asked them to pay cash, the gang members assaulted them, damaged the bunk and also robbed money from them, said the SP.
When the injured persons informed the police, a team rushed to the spot and examined the CCTV footage and police found the vehicle number — TN59W8685. Immediately, Madurai police alerted all the check posts in the region and when the vehicle entered Siavaganga district, the SP formed special teams to nab the gang members.
