Bengaluru: Do-gooder cops help 90-year-old find home

Mr Rego had taken the poor old woman into his house by the time the two policemen arrived.

Bengaluru: While the men in khaki are infamous for assaulting citizens, demanding bribes and collecting hafta, here are two night beat police constables attached to the Hennur police station who not only shifted a 90-year-old destitute woman to a shelter home, but also emptied their wallets at the centre’s donation box.

As the city was gearing up for a total bandh on Friday morning with policemen deployed at every nook and cranny of the city, Mr Neelakanta Gowda and Mr Mushtaq Alandkar were helping restore the people’s faith in the police force by helping the nonagenarian, who had lost her way home, find a temporary shelter.

The two policemen, who were on night beat, received a call from Mark Rego, a Good Samaritan, about the 90-year-old woman, identified as Muniyamma, who had lost her way, and come near his house hungry, tired and shivering in cold. Mr Rego had taken the poor old woman into his house by the time the two policemen arrived.

Mr Rego, who appreciated the work by the Bengaluru police, took to the social media to sing their praise. He said, “The two policemen were extremely helpful and drove around the locality for over two hours, hoping that the elderly lady would find her way back, but to no avail.”

Mr Rego said, “Around 4 am, we took her to the Hennur police station where an official report was filed. The policemen at the station were extremely polite and helpful. After completing the process around 5.30 am, the two constables made her sit in the Hoysala vehicle and took her to the ‘Home of Hope’, a shelter situated beyond Hennur.”

Mr Rego said that going beyond their call of duty, Mr Neelakanta Gowda and Mr Mushtaq Alandkar helped the woman get a temporary shelter till someone came and claimed her. Mr Rego was left speechless when the two policemen emptied out their wallets into the donation box placed at the reception. They then offered to drop Mr Rego back home.

“Around 7 am, the two policemen drove me back home and even stopped on the way to buy me a cup of tea and absolutely refused to let me pay for it,” Mr Rego said.

Saluting the two police constables, Mr Rego said, “Take a bow gentlemen. True Cops with a heart! Bengaluru Police need more people like you.”
