Mangaluru: The Yenepoya Deemed to be University has begun a novel post-graduate diploma in Applied Islamics, which besides focusing on an Islamic analysis of the scientific and social developments in the modern world, will work towards a “common religious morality.” “The principles of Islam can be applied in the health and social sciences for the benefit of the world. This course is unique,” said the head of the chair in Islamic Studies and Research Centre , Dr Javed Jamil speaking to Deccan Chronicle.
“We will also have comparative religion as part of the course. We want to invite scholars from other religions and communities to address the students. The effort will be to bring together all religions and communities on the basis of a common religious morality rather than fighting each other on the ground of religious identity,” he added. The course, which will start from the present academic year, was inaugurated by noted Islamic scholar, Maulana Mohamood Madani at the university on Thursday.
Chapters on India’s Constitution and the importance of its secular and democratic values and international institutions will also be covered. “Applied Islam refers to the application of Islamic principles in the study of law, natural , health and social sciences, including Economics and Philosophy,” Dr Jamil explained, adding, “Modern theories in different fields will be analysed in the light of Islamic principles and alternative terminologies, policies, definitions, methodologies, policies and paradigms consistent with Islamic teachings will be developed with the aim of helping to create a cleaner, healthier and more peaceful world.” Twelve students have joined the course, with some from Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand too joining it besides those from Karnataka.
