Syndicate summons Kerala Law Academy principal V N Mani
Thiruvananthapuram: The syndicate subcommittee meeting on Thursday decided to summon Kerala Law Academy Law College principal V.N. Mani to the syndicate meeting on Friday. The decision was taken over the complaints that former principal Lakshmy Nair had obtained two degrees simultaneously. According to a complaint, she had registered for MA History at the Sree Venkateswara University, Tirupati, while undergoing the three-year LLB course here. As per rules, if a student of Kerala University pursues two courses simultaneously, the university has the power to cancel the degree.
The meeting witnessed a ruckus over the failure of the university to decide on various complaints related to the law academy, including whether it was aided or unaided and whether its bylaw was legal. Though the complaints were included for discussions at various subcommittee meetings, they were being postponed. The postponement was questioned by CPI member R. Lathadevi and Congress member Jyothikumar Chamakala. On Thursday also a complaint filed by senior citizen forum president Krishnan Nair came up before the committee.
The college students had in January organised a stir over various issues and it ended on February 8 after conciliatory talks chaired by Education Minister C. Raveendranath. As per the agreement, Ms Nair was removed from the post of principal based on the decision of the governing council. Mr Mani was appointed in her place as per the university guidelines. The management has assured that Ms Nair will not return even as a faculty for the next 5 years.
