Floodwater halts coal production in SCCL’s 19 opencast mines

Due to flood waters entering the opencast mines, the motors that are used to pump the rainwater outside are not functioning

ADILABAD: With floodwaters entering mines for the past five days, 19 opencast mines owned by the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) had to stop producing coal. The SCCL produces coal valued between Rs 45 and Rs 55 crore per day, source said.

Sources said that the target of the total coal excavation is 2.10 lakh tonnes per day from the total opencast mines amounting to 70 to 80 percent of the total coal production from opencast and underground mines every day in SCCL.
However, due to flood waters entering the opencast mines, the motors that are used to pump the rainwater outside are not functioning, and the heavy vehicles needed to transport coal are being hit by mud and floodwater that has accumulated there.

The SCCL has to excavate 34,900 tonnes of coal per day from five opencast mines alone in the erstwhile Adilabad district and around 1.63 lakh tonnes of coal per day from 19 opencast mines in erstwhile Adilabad, Warangal and Khammam, and Karimnagar districts. Meanwhile, the SCCL is working to excavate coal at its 24 underground mines.
