UAV teams working on linking water bodies

Chennai: The manoeuvring skills and capability of unmanned aerial vehicles were at display at Aero Design Challenge Competition in Anna University on Saturday

Though the micro-aircraft, Quadrocopters, with public addressing system caught the attention of the audience, the Ornithopter, a robot flying bird, left the audience awestruck.

“The unmanned aerial vehicle research is thriving around the world. The Centre for Aerospace Research in Anna University has developed UAVs which can be used in various applications like disaster management, land survey and agriculture purposes,” said K.P. Anbalagan, higher education minister.

“The UAV team is working on a project to link the waterbodies in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri district. If it is successful then the same would be implemented in other districts as well,” he said.

Avions team from PESIT in Bengaluru won the overall performance award which includes Rs 1 lakh cash prize. Team Ballistic from Sastra University in Thanjavur and Team Albatross from VIT University in Vellore jointly shared the second prize.

Team Alpha from MLR Institute of Technology and Sky Riders from Gokaraju Rangaraju Institute of Engineering and Technology, both from Hyderabad shared the third prize.

The Aero Design Challenge Competition 2017 has received an overwhelming response this year. From all over the country, 93 teams registered for the competition. Higher education secretary Sunil Paliwal, Anna University Registrar S.Ganesan, Centre for Aerospace Research director K. Senthilkumar and others participated.
