Dengue second wave hits Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: A second wave of spiralling dengue cases has swept the capital taking the life of a woman. While District Health Officials confirm only three dengue deaths this year, nearly 10 fever-stricken patients have died of suspected dengue. On Saturday, a 46-year-old woman hailing from Balaramapuram succumbed to a suspected case of dengue at Medical College Hospital. She was identified as Chandrika from Ayaniyarathal near Aithiyoor, Balaramupuram.
“She was down with dengue fever for the past one week and was undergoing treatment at Balaramapuram Public Health Centre. Her platelet count dropped drastically and she was referred to Medical College Hospital where she passed away in the morning,” relatives said. She leaves behind husband Chandran, daughter Athira and son Chandu. Health officials were not available for comment on the second Saturday of June. It was unknown whether anti-dengue drives, which are customary after a fever death, was executed in Balaramapuram.
Meanwhile, the family of a 20-year-old woman, who is suspected to have died because of dengue fever, approached the DMO blaming negligent treatment. The girl identified as Sreekutty, a student of Women’s College had sought treatment at Vithura CHC. Despite test results being available on time she was not referred to Medical College Hospital in time, officials said.
Officials attached to Kazhakoottam police station had earlier said that around three migrant workers had succumbed to fever. Dengue deaths were reported at Vizhinjam and Peringammala also. As per the DHS daily statistics, the cases of dengue shows no dip despite the rains in June. Around 146 confirmed dengue cases and 665 suspected cases of dengue were reported on Friday, June 9. This is a sharp rise from April 10 when only 63 confirmed cases and 195 suspected cases were reported.
