Chennai: Cops to gather details of auto drivers as girl molested'
Chennai: Three days after a college student was allegedly molested in a running share auto by the driver and his accomplices, the police higher officials said that the details of share autos and drivers will be collected to prevent future incidents.
“The police will collect details of share auto owners and drivers who operate in Guindy, Velachery, ECR, Tambaram and nearby areas,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) Rohith Nathan said.
The steps have been taken after a share auto driver and his friends tried to misbehave with a teenage college girl. “On May 7 evening, a Trichy-based girl who is studying in an engineering college girl was molested when she was returning to her accommodation in Porur. She boarded the auto at Guindy bus stand,” the police said.
Although other passengers were in the auto, all of them alighted in DLF stop and the girl and two others left alone with the driver. “But the driver stopped the vehicle en route and the trio had tried to molest her. After her screaming, the driver started the auto and drove towards Porur, they continue to misbehave all along,” the police said.
When the auto was stuck in traffic block near Porur, the girl had managed to jump out of the auto and escaped. She also informed the incident to her father Devarajan in Trichy and he rushed to the city.
Based on the complaint from the girl on May 8, the Guindy police have registered a case and are checking the CCTV grabs on the route to nab three persons. Meanwhile, the police also asked the trade unions to furnish the details of auto drivers affiliated with them. “To move will help to nab the perpetrators and it will prevent future incidents,” the police said.
