THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The temperatures in the state have not come down though it has received summer showers. Intense heat continues to sweep through Kozhikode, Kannur and Palakkad. For the first time this summer, Palakkad ceased to be the hottest place in the state.
The honour is now shared by Kannur and Kozhikode, both of which have recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1 degrees celsius. In Palakkad, it is 38.9 degrees celsius. The daily bulletins put out by the weather wing of CUSAT stated that state-wide thunder showers with lightning were expected from May 12 onwards for the next two-three days.
“Rainfall of the order of one cm is expected at times over the central and southern districts as well as over the eastern hilly region,” it said. Nonetheless, IMD forecasts “fairly widespread rain” only on May 12.
Rain occurred at one or two places in the state. The chief amounts of rainfall reports in the state are: Kollam 2 cm; Chengannur (Alappuzha district), Kurudamannil (Pathanamthitta district), Aryankavu and Punalur (both in Kollam district) and Muvattupuzha (Ernakulam district) 1 each.
IMD states that there has been no large change in the maximum temperature in the state during the past 24 hours. However, it was “appreciably above normal” in Kannur, Kozhikode and Palakkad districts and “above normal” in Kottayam, Malappuram, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kollam districts.
