Kaloor-Kathrikadavu road crumbles as Election Commission flashes poll code on repair

The poorly lit areas are the most dangerous spots.

KOCHI: The busy Kaloor-Kathrikadavu road has turned out to be a death trap for motorists and pedestrians due to the Election Commission’s intransigent approach that the road repair works could not be allowed before the Assembly elections are over. Despite the repeated request submitted by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), which owns the road, the Commission didn’t permit the repair work stating that it would be in violation of model code of conduct.

The road, trenched for KWA’s pipe laying works, is in dilapidated condition and regular accidents involving two-wheel riders and pedestrians are being reported.
On Monday night, a pregnant woman while travelling in a two-wheeler sustained serious injuries when the motor bike skidded in a gutter in the road. The poorly lit areas are the most dangerous spots.

Expressing helplessness over undertaking the repair works, GCDA chairman N. Venugopal told this paper that tender process for repairing the road at a cost of Rs 1.76 crore has been completed by February even before the KWA completes the pipe line laying.

“In view of the elections, the Authority tendered the work well in advance, but of no use. Now, relaying of the damaged road can be taken up after the polls when the monsoon will begin. During rains, the contractor will not be ready for repairing as it will affect quality and durability of the road,” Mr Venugopal added.
