Thiruvananthapuram: Though the overall pass percentage and A-plus grades have come down, the schools in Thiruvananthapuram had their fair share of joy.
Of the 32,794 students who appeared for the exam from 174 schools in the capital, only 80.44 per cent qualified for higher studies and only 867 got A-plus.
This is a sharp detour from 2015 when 32,394 students from the city schools appeared for exam and 82.93 per cent qualified for higher studies (EHS) with 1,248 students getting A-plus. While the schools had anticipated a decline in EHS it has not been as bad as expected, school officials said.
From the Carmel Girls Higher Secondary School, 309 students attended the higher secondary examinations and 71 of them got A-plus. Two of the students, Keerthana K and Rose Paul both from biology stream secured full score.
From the St Mary’s School, Pattom, which sent the most number of children for the exam (826), 93.22 per cent of them became eligible for higher studies. From St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School which sent around 470 students for the exam, over 87 per cent qualified and 18 pupil got A-plus grades.
“A decline in the percentage was expected and the quality of examinations has gone up. Things were stricter this time,” said St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School principal Varghese P.J. Incidentally, more students (58.33 per cent) from technical schools became eligible for higher studies as against 50.22 per cent last year.
