Dog goes berserk, bites 25 persons

Kakinada: A dog went berserk at Jaggampeta in Kakinada district on Monday and bit as many as 25 persons. Many people were present in the sandy market in Jaggampeta, the main scene, for purchases.

The dog bit two persons in Neeladriraopeta village of Jaggampeta mandal. Later, it came to Jaggampet and started biting the people in the market area. The people there panicked and fled the scene by making a hue and cry. The locals couldn’t bear it anymore, decided that it went mad, and killed it on the spot, eyewitnesses said.

Animal husbandry officials visited the spot and confirmed the dog was mad. Veterinary officer Dr Satyanarayana told Deccan Chronicle that “vast salivation” was found in the dog, which confirmed it had turned mad.

The injured were taken to the Community Health Centre at Jaggampeta. Medical officer Dr Sandhya administered them the anti-Rabies vaccine.

CHC superintendent Dr Ramesh said the infected were required to be administered the Human Rabies Immune Globulin’’ vaccine. The hospital administered HRIG to 15 persons. The remaining 10 persons who got multiple bites from the dog were referred to the Government General Hospital in Kakinada.

According to doctors, HRIB is administered only once, at the beginning of anti-rabies prophylaxis, to previously unvaccinated persons. This will provide immediate antibodies until the body can respond to the vaccine by actively producing antibodies of its own. “HRIG should be thoroughly infiltrated in the area around the wound and into the wounds,” doctors said.
