One year on, LDF yet to fix coordination glitch
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The initiative taken by CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran in breaking the deadlock over Jishnu’s mother Mahija's hunger fast has pointed to the need for effective intervention of LDF at the political level in handling critical issues. Mr Rajendran’s discussion with Kodiyeri and other top LDF leaders which led to an early solution on Sunday, indicated that the initiative taken at the political level helps greatly in crisis situations. Many in the Left camp believe that LDF state committee or liaison committee should play a key role in preventing issues from snowballing into major controversies in future.
The LDF government is just a month away from celebrating its first anniversary but it seems to be struggling to move smoothly on the tracks. The differences between the two major parties in LDF – the CPM and CPI have come to the fore on many issues during this period with the latest one being Mahija’s protest. Many believe the LDF state leadership is not rising up to the occasion to resolve these differences. Left fellow travellers say the front would be able to deliver the goods only if it worked as a cohesive entity without courting fresh controversies.
Last month CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury had made it clear that the LDF Government required to get down to serious business of delivering on the promises made to people during the Assembly elections. He had assured that CPM would not find scapegoats or excuse to cover up lapses. Yechury had also pointed out that the functioning of the government would be subjected to constant monitoring and evaluation. “We will remain faithful to the people who have voted us on the basis of these promises,” he said. Clearly the LDF state leadership and the CPM central leaders will have to adopt a proactive strategy to ensure things moved in the right direction.
