BSNL all set for WiFi revolution in Ernakulam
Kochi: Public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Ernakulam Secondary Switching Area (SSA) is set to install 55 wifi hotspots under the area in the coming year for the public to use with a surfing speed of 10 Mbps. Places where free wifi access will be available include Vennala, Angamali, Thevara, Palarivatton, Thrikkakkara, Kalamassery, Karukutty, Muvattupuzha, Ghandhi Nagar, Mattancherry, Tripunithura, Chottanikkara, Aluva, Panampilly, Mavelipuram, Kotamagalam, Kusumagiri, Thammanam, Pathadipalam, Palluruthy Veli, Thaikkattukara, Anjumana, Kattappana South, , Nettor, Perumbavoor, Elamakkara, Vaduthala, Eroor, Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva Market and Ernakulam Jos Junction.
G Muraleedharan, principal general manager, BSNL, said that the service is likely to be started by coming June and it will be in addition to 12 locations already made wifi-enabled in association with Kochi Corporation and a private firm. According to the Principal General Manager, the Kerala BNSL region could add 2,20,045 new connections last month while 61,221 prepaid customers were added last one month alone in Ernakulam business district alone. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Ernakulam region, has made a turnover of Rs 508 crore during the last fiscal which is up by Rs 8 crore.
"By comparing the last five years this is the highest revenue we have received. We could add more than Rs 8 crore comparing the last fiscal," said G Muraleedharan. According to the PGM, the region is expecting to amass a revenue of 1525 crore in the next fiscal. He also said that Ernakulam business district came second nationally behind Gujarat Mehsana district in selling BSNL sim cards.
