Anna University gets App ready for its students
Chennai: Anti-ragging emergency call numbers, campus map, timetable, attendance details and the last date for paying the fee – all these details will be available in one app for first year students who will join in the Anna University from the next academic year.
The app is named as Student Centric Mobile Information System (SCMIS). Students roll number would be the username and they can choose any password.
“We want to help students and parents, who come to the campus for the first time. By downloading this app, students can manoeuvre without any difficulty in the campus,” said S. Ganesan, registrar, Anna University.
The app will also have the timetable synced with the calendar which can give the schedule for the day. It will also have the catalogue of phone numbers including the health centre in the university.
This android app is jointly developed by three students from computer science engineering – S. Viswanath, Kandan and S. Anandkumar. It took them nearly six months to complete as they did it along with their regular academic schedule.
“By using this app, students can also contact teachers if they have any difficulty in lessons. They can also log into the Additional Controller of Examinations website to check his attendance and marks,” said Rajeswari Sridhar from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Anna University.
She and another faculty member Mary Anita Rajam guided the students. “The project has crossed the pilot stage and we need real data sets to test the app. At present, procuring the necessary equipment for infrastructure is going on,” she said. The university is planning to have private cloud server for the app.
More features like sending SMS alerts to parents regarding their wards’ attendance could be added to the app. But in the first phase, the features focusing on students alone are expected to be introduced.
There is also plan to make the campus map available without the user id and password in the app to make it available to the general public as well.
