Kerala High Court adjourns bail plea of Fr Thomas Therakam

The petitioner sought to restrain police from arresting him in the case.

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Friday adjourned the anticipatory bail plea of Fr Thomas Therakam, former Child Welfare Council Chairman (Wayanad) who allegedly helped Fr Robin escape from police in Kottiyur minor rape case. The petitioner sought to restrain police from arresting him in the case. However, the court refused to issue such an order and adjourned the matter for further hearing. The court will also consider the plea filed by Ophelia, Superintendent of Holy Infant Mary's Girls Home Adoption centre, Vythiri.

According to prosecution, Fr Thomas Therakam, was the chairman of the Wayanad CWC when the incident occurred and he tried to destroy the evidence in the case even though he was aware of the incident. The court, meanwhile, dismissed a plea filed by Thrissur based litigant P.D. Joseph seeking the state to depute a special investigation to probe the Kottiyoor rape case. State submitted that it had already appointed a probe team. Recording this, the court dismissed the plea. Fr Robin was arrested in Nedumbassery while he was trying to escape to Canada. He is currently in police custody.
