Guruvayur temple to get water supply
Thrissur: A day after the District Collector ordered the taking over of 12 borewells in Thaikkad and Chovalloorppadi regions near Guruvayur for the smooth supply of drinking water to the Lord Sree Krishna Temple and the hotels around it, Guruvayur Municipality issued guidelines on Friday to prevent over exploitation of water from these wells. According to the Municipal Chairperson P. K. Santhakumari, water would be supplied to the temple devaswom, wards in the municipality and hotels as per their needs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the rate of Rs 750 per tanker. Those who are in need of water have to collect a pass from the civic body.
Only tankers of 5,000 litres will be used for supplying water. The excess money collected from the supply of water will be used to recharge the groundwater in Thaikkad and Chovalloorppadi. The tankers would be installed with GPS and the Ground Water Authority had been asked to conduct a study in the area, she said.
Till monsoon, the private owners of the well taken over by the civic body will not get money for the water taken from their wells. The Collector had invoked sections of the Disaster Management Act to take over the borewells which were allegedly over exploiting groundwater.
