Cops foil ‘chalo Assembly’ rally by TS auto and cab drivers

HYDERABAD: Fuming at the state government for ignoring their long pending demand for a transport welfare board and an increase in fares, auto and cab drivers JAC took out a rally as part of their ‘chalo Assembly’ protest here on Friday. They were detained by the police near the venue as the Assembly session was in progress. Some JAC leaders were taken into preventive custody on Thursday night.

It may be recalled that the JAC had organized ‘chalo RTA’ in June and had disrupted traffic movement near the Khairatabad RTA office.

A. Sathi Reddy from the Telangana Auto Union JAC said ‘we started our protest rally on auto-rickshaws from Himayatnagar but we were immediately detained and moved to Chikadpally police station. He added, “our demands are genuine. Fares of auto rickshaws have remained the same for over a decade. We want more permits for autos as the present one lakh plus autos are not sufficient to cater to the rising population.”

Shaik Salauddin, Telangana State Taxi and Drivers JAC, “our long pending demand has been for a welfare board. The government is silent on this issue.”
