Tirunelveli: Couple get death for honour' killing

It is believed that this is the first case of death penalty awarded for honour' killing.

Tirunelveli: A couple was sentenced to capital punishment by Tirunelveli district court on Wednesday in an honour killing case.

The judgment has been hailed by social and political outfits, as it has been delivered within eight months of the murder.

Kalpana, a Dalit housewife of Vannarapettai, Tirunelveli, was hacked to death on May 2016 in connection with the inter-caste love marriage of her younger brother, Viswanathan, a railway employee, with Kauvery, a Thevar community girl.

In connection with this murder, Tirunelveli city police arrested Kauvery's father, Sankaranarayanan and her mother, Chellammal of Thachanallur and produced before the Tirunelveli district second additional sessions court.

On Wednesday, the court awarded death sentence to the convicts, Sankaranarayanan and his wife. Before the commencement of the court session, Chellammal on Wednesday morning cried that she and her husband were wrongly implicated in the case and demanded a fresh inquiry.

The speedy judgement in the honour killing case was hailed by Dalit outfits. The Marxist Communist Party of India, despite its stand against capital punishment, too welcomed the death penalty to the couple.

According to K.G. Baskar, district secretary of Tirunelveli's Marxist Communist Party of India, the judgement by the court in this case was a landmark one as justice was deliveredwithin eight months from the crime.
