Dumping yards dot Kozhikode
KOZHIKODE: The waste management has once again become a headache for the corporation, which has failed to solve it after taking charge. Prime tourist spots like Mananchira square and Kozhikode beach are becoming dump yards. While plastic sacks get accumulated at Mananchira for months, the waste segregation is a filthy affair on the beach.
“We are aware of the issue, but there are no projects to clear the waste at the Mananchira square and the beach,” said a top official from the corporation.
Though there are cleaning campaigns on the beach, more works are being carried out by the volunteers, especially after any major events and at the weekend, when the visitors are more.
The Kudumbasree workers have declined to accept plastic waste from residential areas. The parallel plans to arrange waste management at source have also failed, admit officials. Waste dumping has become prominent on the premises of Lion’s Park, Gandhi Park and Eranhipalam bypass. Though the residents’ associations in the city have implemented effective mechanisms to tackle those dumping waste, the corporation is yet to take such steps.
