Don't crucify officials: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Pinarayi Vijayan said that the usual procedures of a Vigilance probe were given disproportionate publicity triggering controversies.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed concern that Vigilance probes were being given unnecessary hypes even in the initial stages, which amounted to the crucifixion of the accused. In an oblique reference to the Vigilance probe against additional chief secretary K.M. Abraham, Mr. Vijayan said that the usual procedures of a Vigilance probe were given disproportionate publicity triggering controversies. It amounted to crucifixion of those facing probes.

But when the Vigilance concluded the probe by exonerating the official, it did not get much publicity. The Vigilance was bound to probe all petitions it received. Even non-corrupt officials would have to face probes, the chief minister said while inaugurating the anti-corruption day organised by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau here on Friday. The VACB would initiate steps to curb corruption in sectors like self-financing, environment and health.

The confidence of people in Vigilance was increasing. Apart from curbing corruption, the Vigilance was also initiating deterrent measures against corruption, he said. The chief minister launched two mobile apps, Arisingkerala and Whistle Now, brought out by the VACB for the people to report corruption. They can be downloaded from Google play store.

No receipents for whistle-blower award
Even as 24 persons applied for the maiden whistle- blower award instituted by the VACB, none met the norms prescribed by it. The VACB plans to award Rs 5 lakh each to 25 whistle-blowers every year, said Vigilance director Jacob Thomas.
