Crocodile spotted in Musi river

As the news of the crocodile sighting spread, crowds gathered to watch the reptile and traffic beside the river slowed to a crawl

Hyderabad: Highly polluted the Musi river might be, but its dirty water — mostly untreated sewage and industrial effluents — appear to be no deterrent to crocodiles. On Saturday, for the second time in less than a year, a mugger crocodile was seen on the river bank at Attapur.

As the news of the crocodile sighting spread, crowds gathered to watch the reptile and traffic on the road beside the river slowed to a crawl.

It was in September last year that a mugger crocodile, a freshwater crocodile species, was spotted on the river bank near the Puranapul bridge.

In both instances, forest department officials said that the heavy rains that have caused floods in the Musi may have washed the crocodiles down the course of the river.

Though forest department officials reached the spot near Attapur after being informed about the presence of the crocodile, by the time they reached there, it had disappeared. Officials warned locals not to venture on to the river banks because of the spotting of the crocodile.
