Uniform syllabus in distance education soon

At present, varsities under the aegis of higher education department offer the distance learning programmes by following their own syllabus.

Chennai: In an effort aimed at improving the quality of education for better employability prospects, the state government has proposed to evolve a uniform syllabus and course content for the distance learning programmes of all the universities, higher education minister K.P. Anbazhagan informed the Assembly.

At present, varsities under the aegis of higher education department offer the distance learning programmes by following their own syllabus. This has put the students who pursued the courses to hardship as it raised the issue of education qualification for employment.

“Hence, as a solution to this, the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered the preparation of uniform syllabus and course content for the distance learning programmes of the universities functioning under the control of the higher education department,” the minister said on Tuesday. Winding up the debate on demand for grants for his department, Mr Anbazhagan said the task will be executed by the Tamil Nadu Open University at Rs 5 crore.

The government has also proposed to commence special bachelor degree course in Computer Applications in Bharathidasan University, Tiruchy, for the benefit of hearing and speech impaired students. Books on Communication Development (Bridge Course) will be issued to the students studying in 19 Government Arts and Science colleges. The Tamil Nadu state higher education council will provide the book: The World in your stride, at Rs 12.50 lakh.

Apart from establishing internet centre for disaster recovery management and skill development centre to create employment opportunities to graduates in the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, the government will establish Mother Teresa Women’s University’s Research and Extension Centre, Coimbatore besides construct a multipurpose hall for the Mother Teresa Women’s University’s Research and Extension Centre, Madurai.
