Slow probe into faulty saline bottles irks doctors in Telangana

A source in the health department said two more tests would be conducted on the saline to confirm the findings in the first report.

Hyderabad: Telangana state Drug Controller has submitted the initial report on the presence of Klebsiella bacteria in the saline bottles that were used in treating 13 patients in the SD Hospital on June 30, of whom eight persons lost their sight.

A source in the health department said two more tests would be conducted on the saline to confirm the findings in the first report. A culture test will be carried out, after which a three-member committee would decide on the next course of action.

A senior government doctor at SD Hospital said the contamination of saline was established in the three tests carried out by the hospital. “The drug controller is taking too long to submit the report. The role of the Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation is not being probed,” he said. In-charge drug controller Amruth Rao refused to comment.
