Negligence leaves Kappad beach in shambles
KOZHIKODE: From the run-down buildings to the broken lamp posts, nothing remains in proper shape at Kappad beach, which was once known as the most visited tourist spot in the district. Kozhikode sub- collector K. Gopalakrishnan along with the officials of District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) visited the spot on Tuesday to review the present condition of the beach that has become intolerable to hundreds of tourists coming here.
The high sea tide during the last two months has also taken away the recently constructed sea walls, in addition to the destruction of other beautification works carried out at the spot. "It was two years back a major beautification and renovation work was implemented at Kappad beach, which has almost been destroyed in this monsoon season, requiring urgent repair works, said Mr Gopalakrishnan, also the secretary in- charge of DTPC.
"We have decided to list out the immediate requirements to make the spot fit and safe for the public to visit, and according to the demand all the works will be carried out. Sea wall and toilet facility will be given top priority," he said. Mr N. Radhakrishnan, ASI, Kappad police protection and assistance centre, said, "the ceiling of the building meant for the shelter of the visitor has started crumbling, posing a threat to those resting inside."
At present there are only two lamp posts in working condition, leading people to spend evenings in darkness at the beach. "Due to lack of electricity in the area, we are unable to carry out the security measures properly," he added. The central government had sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore in 2012 for the tourism development project here, which also includes a museum showcasing the historic importance of Kappad as the spot where the Portuguese first landed in the country. A related library is also planned in addition to strengthening and beautification of the beach under the earlier plan. But the project lapsed due to the negligence shown by the authorities.
