Thiruvananthapuram: As part of government’s efforts to create awareness among students about poltry and inculcate earning habits, Kerala Poultry Deelopment Corporation distributed 1200 chicks among students of Cotton Hill School here on Tuesday. 5 chicks, 3 kg poultry feed and medicine packets each were given to students of standards 6,7,8 and 9. The fourth edition of chick distribution at the school was inaugurated by Minister for Forest and animal husbandry K Raju.
The programme first initiated by KEPCO in 2011, is aimed exclusively for students and is named as “Chicks in small hands”. The programme was organised by Kerala Poultry Development Corporation as a part of various activities implemented to achieve self reliance in the production of egg and meat.
Arya of ninth class was excited about collecting chicks as she likes pets very much. Nisha, a parent came to school to collect the chick as her daughter was determined. “We do not have a chicken coop at home. We are trying to get a new one,” she said. Deputy Mayor Rakhi Ravikumar, Dr. V. Sunil Kumar, Anil X. IAS, Dr. N. N. Shashi, P.V. Sheeja. V. S. Sivakumar MLA presided over the function.
