Chennai railway stations to get CCTV cameras by December
Chennai: All railway stations in Chennai Division would come under CCTV surveillance by December as part of the Southern Railway's measure to augment safety and security of passengers, a move that assumes significance in the wake of the brutal murder of techie Swathi on the platform of Nungambakkam railway station.
The Southern Railway is currently procuring the CCTV cameras and they would installed at all stations under the Chennai division in 120 days. Chairman of Passengers' Amenities Committee H Raja here made the announcement here on Tuesday.
Inspecting the Chennai Central and Egmore stations along with his team members, Mr H. Raja said all stations in Chennai division would be brought under the cover of CCTV and that all efforts are being made to ensure that safety and security remains top priority of the Railways.
"Moreover, all major stations in the Southern Railway division would be brought under CCTV surveillance in the next 90 days. We will ensure that the deadline is met," he told reporters. Passenger safety at suburban railway stations in city became matter of concern after Ms Swathi was murdered in broad daylight at the station by a youth.
