3-member panel to probe denial of care at Ernakulam Medical College

The principal said that the burns unit was fully prepared to admit and handle patients if the situation warranted it.

KOCHI: A three-member committee has been constituted by the principal of Ernakulam Medical College Dr V.K. Sreekala to probe the incident in which a one-and-a- half-year old girl was denied treatment at the medical college on Sunday night. The team comprises medical superintendent Dr Anil Kumar and deputy superintendents Dr Peter P. Vazhayil and Dr Jomone Jose. “They have been asked to submit a report on Wednesday,” said Dr Sreekala.

She said that the duty doctor reported that the child was given necessary aid and the limited percentage of burns did not warrant admission and hence was given a tablet and ointment. “The inquiry will reveal the facts,” she said when it was pointed out that the child’s relatives had alleged denial of treatment. The principal said that the burns unit was fully prepared to admit and handle patients if the situation warranted it.

“The unit was closed for the past five days as there were no patients. In any emergency, patients can be treated here by summoning staff,” she said when it was pointed out that the Edayar industrial belt was a stone’s throw away from the medical college which demands higher preparedness on the part of the hospital.
