Hartals in Kozhikode as CPM, BJP clash
KOZHIKODE: Violence erupted in the district between BJP and CPM men following the attack on CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury in New Delhi. While the CPM observed a hartal on Friday, the BMS has called one on Saturday. In the wake of the violence in Vadakara on Wednesday and Thursday, two petrol bombs were thrown at the CPM district committee office here in the wee hours of Friday when district secretary P. Mohanan was present. He escaped unhurt as one of the bombs did not explode. A special investigation team was formed under north assistant commissioner E.P. Prithviraj to probe the incident.
Police registered a case against five identifiable people. Mr Mohanan was returning after visiting the Feroke area committee office that had come under attack. Though the CPM alleged the attack was by the BJP, the latter dismissed the claims saying that the attacks were the results of the infighting within the CPM. At Muthalakkulam, some news photographers were attacked when they tried to take the pictures of the hartal violence on Friday. In the evening, the district office of BMS in Kallayi was attacked and they called a dawn-to- dusk hartal on Saturday. The RSS and the BJP have supported the hartal call.
