Water recedes from Kochi's flooded areas

Many shops closed following heavy rains were reopened on Thursday morning.

KOCHI: A day after the massive flooding and incessant rains, the water receded from most of the roads in the city. Shops and houses in areas like Judges Avenue, SRV Road, Convent Junction, Press Club Road, Paramara Road and St Vincent Road which saw a massive gush of water on Wednesday are yet to be back to normal. Most of the lanes and pavements were cluttered with garbage and silt. Pedestrians found it difficult to travel over the sludge.

Many shops closed following heavy rains were reopened on Thursday morning, and owners were found busy cleaning the mess created by rain. Eateries along the Ernakulam North railway station are the worst hit. “The rain has just begun, and it already started to flood. Our business will be worst hit as people will not come to the flooded restaurant. Last year, we suffered a loss to the tune of '1 lakh owing to the heavy rains,” said Ziyad, a hotel worker.

“I had to shift the cooking appliances to the interiors of my shop. The water rose up to two feet,” added Siddharth, a teashop vendor near Judges Avenue. Water logging during monsoon has been a perennial problem for the residents of Indira Nagar near Judges Avenue. “I have been living here for the past 30 years and had to endure the same misery all these years,” Usha Suresh a native of Indira Nagar said.
