Rains add to woes in coastal areas; roads, houses take hit in Kerala

The sea wall along the Eravipuram coast has been completely destroyed

KOLLAM: With the monsoon intensifying, the houses and the coastal road along
the Paravur-Azheekkal stretch have been destroyed in the sea fury, though construction of breakwaters along the region is fast progressing. The sea wall along the Eravipuram coast has been completely destroyed.

The wall along Kalathumpadu, St. Thomas church, Chanattazhikam, Thathakkal, and Kurishummoodu areas is the worst affected. As many as 26 breakwaters will be constructed along Thanni to Kakkathoppe area under a Rs 18-crore project. Six breakwaters designed by the experts from IIT Chennai have been constructed and the remaining work will resume by September.

The coastal road along the Kollam–Paravur stretch has been damaged by the bolsters deposited along the coastline in connection with the breakwater construction. Over 30 loads of bolsters are being carried along the path on a daily basis in huge trucks which also pose a threat to the life of people travelling through it, allege the local residents. The road is now full of pits.

The road from the Kollam beach to Mayyanad has been damaged in the sea fury which has intensified in Kakkathoppu region with the construction of breakwaters in the Lakshmipuram Thoppe region. The road is being strengthened by depositing bolsters along the sea line.
