Telangana cops beaten up in Odisha during probe

The incident reportedly took place when the cops had gone to the village to investigate a case of robbery that occurred in Hyderabad.

Berhampur: Palpable tension prevailed on Thursday at Dengadi village under Patapur police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district after a group of locals allegedly thrashed Telangana police officials in plain clothes, suspecting them to be child-lifters.

The incident reportedly took place when the cops had gone to the village to investigate a case of robbery that occurred in Hyderabad. Sources said one Manoj Swain, 25, of the village, who works in Hyderabad had looted gold and cash from a house by brandishing a weapon.

Acting on a complaint, the Telengana state police arrested Swain and went to his village for further investigation. Reports said seven police persons had gone to the village, taking Swain with them.

When the cops detained the younger brother of the accused, his family members and the villagers clashed with them. Suspecting the cops to be kidnappers, the villagers thrashed them and vandalised their four-wheeler. Though the police showed their identity cards, the mob did not believe and continued to beat them.

On receiving information, Patapur police reached the spot and rescued the Telangana state cops from the villagers’ clutches. The Patapur police also detained the brother and father of accused Manoj.
