Kozhikode: Six builders get stop memos

Inspection reveals leading builders violated rules and mandatory security regulations.

Kozhikode: The labour and engineering departments under the city corporation continued inspecting construction sites for the third day on Wednesday.

So far, they had visited 30 sites and gave stop memos to six builders for violating building rules and the fire and safety standards.

The inspection revealed leading builders violating most of the rules and entirely ignoring security aspects.

Ramachandran, a senior corporation engineering department official, said a majority of those who got stop memos were top builders in the city.

“We found the violation of security aspects at every site we visited,” he said. “We'll submit a detailed report to the district administration.”

The district collector had sought detailed reports on buildings under construction from local bodies in a week.

The corporation will take action against builders not producing their plan during the inspection.

Also, they should exhibit a board at every site details features of the buildings and workers.

The labour department as part of the Awas project of the Union government will conduct awareness programme at two construction sites in the city that got stop memos.

The Awas project provides insurance to all migrant workers. “We also intend to give awareness to the workers on the safety and security at worksites,” said Rajan, the district labour officer.
